Thyroid problems share symptoms with many other conditions, making diagnosis challenging. It might be time for a thyroid blood test if you experience:
We typically start your evaluation with a thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test. Depending on your results and symptoms, we may also check T3, T4, or thyroid antibody levels.
Usually, fasting isn’t necessary for thyroid tests, but we’ll let you know if your situation requires special preparation.
If your thyroid tests indicate a disorder, we’ll clearly explain your results and discuss treatment options.
Many thyroid conditions, such as hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease, can be effectively managed with medication that replaces or regulates thyroid hormones. Once started, thyroid medications typically take several weeks to show improvement, and dosage adjustments are common based on follow-up tests.
We’ll schedule routine lab checks—often six to eight weeks after medication changes, then less frequently once levels stabilize—to ensure your treatment remains effective. If specialized care from an endocrinologist is needed, we’ll coordinate your referral and keep all aspects of your care connected.
Do I need to fast for a thyroid blood test?
Usually, fasting isn’t required specifically for thyroid tests. However, if you’re having additional blood work at the same appointment, we might recommend fasting. We’ll provide clear instructions beforehand.
How long does it take for thyroid medication to work?
It typically takes a few weeks to notice symptom improvements. Your dosage might require adjustments during this period, so regular follow-ups are important to achieve the best results.
Can my primary care doctor treat Hashimoto’s?
Yes, Hashimoto’s disease is commonly managed by primary care providers. Treatment often involves medication to regulate thyroid hormone levels and regular monitoring of your condition.
Will I need to see an endocrinologist?
Not necessarily. Most thyroid conditions can be effectively managed at our clinic. We reserve endocrinologist referrals for complex or difficult-to-manage cases, ensuring seamless care coordination.
How often do my thyroid levels need to be checked?
Initially, you’ll likely have follow-up testing every six to eight weeks. Once your thyroid levels stabilize, testing frequency usually decreases to every six to 12 months, or as advised by your provider.
